Welcome to Castel Sant’Angelo, a place where Roman history and legends meet.
Originally built as the tomb of Emperor Hadrian, the castle later became a fortress where popes escaped from the Vatican and hid during invasions of the city, using the secret Passetto di Borgo connecting the Vatican to the castle.
According to legend, during a terrible plague in Rome, Pope Gregory the Great saw the Archangel Michael appear above the castle, sheathing his sword as a sign that the epidemic was ending. That vision gave the castle its name.
Many visitors also recognize Castel Sant’Angelo from Angels & Demons, the movie starring Tom Hanks and based on the novel by Dan Brown.
Inside, you’ll discover elegant papal apartments, Renaissance frescoes, prison cells and panoramic terraces with incredible views over Rome; including the castle’s panoramic café, where you can enjoy a cappuccino or a glass of wine overlooking the city.
